OVERVIEW: Sonia Gardner, her brother Marc, and family move philanthropy through the Lasry Family Foundation, whose grantmaking has been rather modest in recent years. According to available tax filings, the foundation did not award any grants in 2017. Gardner steadily supports her alma mater Clark University.
BACKGROUND: Sonia Gardner graduated with her bachelor’s degree from Clark University in 1983 and her J.D. from Cardozo School of Law in 1986. Gardner started as an attorney at investment bank Cowen & Co.’s bankruptcy and reorganization department. In 1995, She co-founded investment firm Avenue Capital with her brother Marc Lasry. The New York based firm manages some $10 billion in assets.
