SOURCE OF WEALTH: Comcast

FUNDING AREAS: Arts & Culture, Jewish Causes, Education & Youth, Environment

OVERVIEW: Julian and Lois Brodsky and family do their grantmaking through the Julian A. and Lois G. Brodsky Foundation, which made a little over $1 million in grants in a recent year. The foundation supports Jewish causes, the arts, and education.

BACKGROUND:  Julian A. Brodsky graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He’s a founder of Comcast Corporation, where he retired as a director and vice chairman. He previously served as executive vice president and CFO of Comcast and also founded and served as chairman of Comcast Interactive Capital Group, an in-house venture capital fund now known as Comcast Ventures.

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: Brodsky is a member of the board of trustees of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and serves on the board of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, where Brodsky and Lois established a music education fund in their name. Other grantees include Arden Theatre Company, Drexel’s Academy of Natural Sciences, The Theatre Offensive, Philadelphia Zoo, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Barnes Foundation, an “American educational art and horticultural institution.”

JEWISH CAUSES: Grantees include the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, American Society For Yad Vashem, and Anti-Defamation League.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Brodsky family, via their foundation, have supported Temple University, including its library and WRTI – Temple Radio. Other grantees include Teach for America and Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation.

ENVIRONMENT: Grantees include Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund, and National Wildlife Federation.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Brodsky family to stick with these interest areas for now. Philadelphia and New Jersey should remain important sites of giving.
