BACKGROUND: Edward L. Shapiro graduated with a B.S. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1986 and an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management in 1990. He was an analyst at Morgan Stanley and vice president at Wellington Management Company. He joined PAR Capital Management in 1997.

THE SHAPIRO FOUNDATION: Launched in 2001, the Shapiro Foundation focuses on seven impact areas: Syrian Refugee Relief, International Relief, Global Health, Medical Research & Treatment, Education, the Jewish Community, and Humanitarian Aid.  The Children’s Hospital Boston is the foundation’s longest standing partner. Shapiro has also worked heavily with Horizons For Homeless Children, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, where he serves on the board, and Boston Medical Center.

In international giving, the foundation partners with Partners in Health, HIAS, and UNICEF on relief and refugee work. The website cites its closest partners.

Previous grantees include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston University’s Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Center, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Boston, The Rashi School (the couple are parents), New Profit, Wharton (Shapiro sits on the undergraduate executive board), and UCLA Anderson School of Business.
